York Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells - its constant problems with parking and traffic

Parking on pavement in York Road 2000/2001 - before the development of Telephone House site:

Parking is a major problem. Many houses were redeveloped in the 1980's and transformed from large houses into smaller flats. These flats are occupied in the main by young professionals who are usually car owners and use their vehicles to drive to work. York Road has space for 40 cars only, yet the number of cars far exceeds the available spaces.

Residents can buy a parking permit from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council for £ 20 per year. However, these limited spaces are also used by shoppers, who if they find a space can park for free for up to one hour. This simply exacerbates an already difficult situation. Requests to the Council to make the road residents parking only, in return for an increased parking permit fee and/or to charge non-residents through the use of meters for street parking have not been taken up by the Council as yet.
Legally only the north side of York Road can be parked in, yet double parking, parking on the pavement and on yellow lines are frequent traffic offences.
