The sandstone grade II listed building was built as a private residence in 1762. The owners delayed conversion to a hotel because of Queen Victoria's last visit in 1835.
The former Calverley House, sometimes called Lushington House, was altered many times before Decimus Burton (1800 - 1881) incorporated it into the Calverley Estate. He added one of its most attractive features, the long verandah on the south side overlooking Calverley Park.
Many of the stylish houses and villas of this town planner, were demolished in Tunbridge Wells. An intact Calverley Estate would nowadays likely be the attraction of the South East.
